CEDA Condemns U.S. Detention Practices at Guantánamo Bay Following Alarming IRAP Report
CEDA is gravely alarmed by the findings of the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP)’s new report, Offshoring Human Rights: Detention of Refugees at Guantánamo Bay, which uncovers the inhumane and punitive treatment of refugee families detained at the U.S. Migrant Operations Center in eastern Cuba. The report reveals the U.S. government’s disturbing use of secretive detention practices that flagrantly violate basic human rights standards, disproportionately harming Cuban and Haitian families fleeing persecution by sea.
“The Migrant Operations Center is emblematic of a broader failure to uphold the rights of those seeking asylum at sea,” said Francisca Vigaud-Walsh, Director of Strategy and Advocacy at CEDA. “Maritime migration does not strip individuals of their rights. Asylum seekers intercepted at sea deserve the same due process protections as those arriving on U.S. soil. Our policies must reflect our values, not punish those seeking safety.”
CEDA urges the Biden administration to establish a humane, rights-respecting approach to maritime migration that honors the dignity of those fleeing danger, persecution, and other human rights concerns.
